Situated in the north of the Royal Palace and designed by inspiration from Khmer ancient temple architecture, the museum is known as the largest-scale collection of Khmer art in the world as well as the top historical, cultural and archaeological museum of Cambodia. It consists of 14.000 antiquities such as sculptural, ceramics, bronzes, and ethnographic objects in different sectors, in which the oldest were from prehistoric times and the rest stretched throughout the glorious Angkor Empire in the past. The long-lasting history and rich culture of Cambodia are simulated honestly and vividly through this huge invaluable collection.

In the period of1975-1979, Khmer Rouge regime expanded and destroyed almost the entire Cambodia, including Phnom Penh capital. In 1979, National Museum was found in serious damaged state with the collapsed or cracked roofs and walls, overgrown weeds, many ruined or stolen artifacts. Under the support of individuals, domestic and foreign governments along with other organizations, the Museum was quickly restored and ready to welcome visitors right in that year. This reconstruction means not only to preserve the precious cultural, art and religious heritage but also to restore the national pride and glorious past of Cambodia, as well as rebuild the relationship between people and cultural values.

Today, the National Museum is considered the cultural center and the inspiration of artistic creativity of Cambodia. It is more profound when the Museum is believed as the sacred place enhancing national pride and unity through learning about the rich cultural heritage of the country.
